International Open Access Week is a global event for the academic research community that raises awareness of the potential benefits of open access publishing. Open access to information is free, immediate, online access to scholarly research, and the right to use, and re-use those research results.

The UC Merced Library will sponsor several events during Open Access Week 2014.

Monday October 20, 2014

SPARC Broadcast – "Generation Open"

12:00 – 1:30 pm
KL 360

Held at World Bank headquarters in Washington, DC. Distinguished speakers will discuss the importance of students and early career researchers in the transition to Open Access and explore how changes in scholarly publishing affects scholars and researchers at different stages of their careers.

Faculty and graduate students are invited to bring their lunch and enjoy the broadcast.

Copyright Criminals Film Screening
Video Preview

6:00 – 7:00 pm
Residence Halls - Crescent Arch (Half Dome 180)

Join us for a free screening of Copyright Criminals, a documentary film about the rise of hip-hop music and the legal issues surrounding sampling and copyright. This 53-minute film is a must-see for hip-hop enthusiasts, musicians, and anyone interested in remixing, mashing up or editing sound, video, or images.

Pizza and drinks will be served during a brief intermission.

Students are invited to join us for dinner and an informative movie.

A Conversation on Open Data
12:00 to 1:00 pm
KL 169 (Bobcat Lair)

UC Merced faculty members Courtenay Conrad and Nathan Monroe (Political Science), Robin DeLugan (Anthropology), and Michael Dawson (Natural Sciences) will speak from their perspectives and experiences on the significance of open access to data for research, including increased community and public engagement with research and scholarship. Bring your own lunch; coffee and dessert will be served.
