Opposing Viewpoints in Context Now Available

July 14, 2014

Opposing Viewpoints in Context is now available to UC Merced students and faculty. This database covers today's hot social issues, from Offshore Drilling to Climate Change, Health Care to Immigration, and provides multiple perspectives on a topic, allowing students to deal with a wide variety of data for their research, writing assignments, debates, presentations and coursework. The resource includes pro/con essays, topic overviews, primary source documents, court-case reviews, data and statistics, podcasts and articles.

2014 Student Research Award Winners Announced

Congratulations to UC Merced undergraduates Stacey Van and Kristen Renberg, both winners of $100 prizes for the 2014 Undergraduate Library Research competition. Stacy and Kristen participated in the research poster competition sponsored by the UC Merced Office of Research and earned the library awards by submitting their research bibliographies and essays about the library research process.

9th Annual Bobcat Art Show On Display in Library and UCM Art Gallery

The Annual Bobcat Art Show opened on April 7th and will be on display through May 7. The show is being held simultaneously in the UCM Art Gallery and the second floor of the UCM Library.

OCLC WorldCat Local Melvyl

On Friday June 245h, the legacy version of Melvyl (the online public catalog for UC Libraries) was decommissioned to make way for the new and improved Melvyl. This new version of Melvyl which utilizes theOCLC Worldcat Local interface has the ability to search 800 million+ items from research institutions throughout the world, connecting UC faculty and students to books and materials across the globe.

Library Provides Access to SCOPUS

The UC Merced Library has recently acquired trial access to SCOPUS, a popular abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature which features smart tools to track, analyze and visualize research. Content covers research output in the fields of technology, medicine, social sciences, arts, and humanities.

Library Open Access Funds Still Available

Last year, the UC Merced Library helped nine faculty members publish articles in open access journals by paying the publication fees. Before the end of March, they hope to help a few more. The pilot officially ends on March 31, 2014 or until funds are expended. UC Merced faculty, lecturers, and graduate students interested in receiving funds are urged to apply soon.

UC Merced Library Student Research Competition

The UC Merced Library invites undergraduate students participating in the 2014 Student Research Poster Competition to apply for an additional research award sponsored by the library. Library awards will recognize excellence in research projects that incorporate library resources, demonstrate high-level information literacy skills, and thoughtfully reflect on strategies utilized in the research process. Award winner(s) will receive $100.
