The Carpentries

the carpentries logo

The Carpentries aim to help researchers by teaching them computing skills in order to work more effectively with data. Comprehensive, two-day workshops cover concepts and tools that workshop participants can apply to their own research and workflows. These tools include, but are not limited to:

  • the Unix shell
  • Git and GitHub
  • R
  • Python
  • MATLAB
  • OpenRefine

The overall Carpentries project is comprised of Software Carpentry, Data Carpentry, and Library Carpentry. Each of those is a community of instructors, trainers, maintainers, helpers, and supporters.

The UC Merced Library offered its first official two-day Data Carpentry workshop in Fall 2017. In 2018, UC Merced became an institutional member of The Carpentries at the silver level (see here for more information on membership tiers). As a member, the UC Merced Library is committed to offering ongoing workshops (from all three Carpentries divisions) and training opportunities to the UC Merced research community.

Information on upcoming and past workshops is provided here. Clicking on the date will take you to the registration page in LibCal. Make sure to register for both days if possible. As the workshop approaches, the information will be updated with a link to the individual workshop's GitHub page.

Get Involved

There are several ways to get involved with the Carpentries at UC Merced.

Certified Carpentries instructors can not only teach workshops at their home institutions but also are added to a database of instructors. As other institutions around the globe request workshops, instructors can travel to teach, with expenses paid by the host institution. At the silver membership tier, we can train a maximum of six individuals at a time. When online training sessions are scheduled, priority registration is given to member institutions.

If you are interested in undergoing formal training and becoming a certified Carpentries instructor, click here and fill out our short survey. We will add you to our waiting list and notify you as soon as a training spot becomes available.

If you are interested in being a helper at Carpentries workshops, click here. We'll contact you when upcoming workshops need helpers!

Volunteering with the Carpentries (either as a helper or an instructor, or both) can be a great addition to your CV or resume.
