VPN Connect from Off Campus
Please press NEXT to continue.
This tutorial will help you:
- Understand the function of the VPN client
- Help you install the VPN on your computer
Use the Right Arrow at the bottom of this window to move through the tutorial.
The VPN allows you to access library resources when you are not on campus. Many library databases, e-books, and journal articles are licensed only for UC Merced students, faculty, and staff. While you are on campus you automatically have access to these resources. But from off campus, you need the VPN to be recognized as a legitimate UC Merced library user.
Downloading the VPN is easy. From the library home page go to:
- Tech Help (in the horizontal menu)
- Connecting from Off Campus (VPN) (in the Tech Help dropdown menu)
- Download the VPN.
Start installing the VPN on your computer by selecting the appropriate operating system. Click on the link.
Installation instructions vary by operating system. You will need to follow the instructions carefully so keep them open in a separate tab or window during the installation.
Although the screen may look a little bit different between Operating Systems, the steps to configure the VPN client software are pretty much the same.
Below is a screenshot of the information required to configure the VPN client.
You will need this information only for the initial configuration. Once the VPN is configured you will use your UCMnetID to log in to the VPN.
Depending on your operating system, the VPN will either appear as an icon on your desktop (PC) or as a program in your applications folder (Mac).
To launch the VPN, click on the icon or application. You will be prompted to log in with your UCMnetID (jdoe7) and password (same as your UCM email). Once you are logged in, open a browser. You should be connected to the campus network.
If you are prompted to pay for articles or to log in again, this probably means that you are not successfully connected to the campus network. Refresh your browser and double check that you are connected with the VPN.
