Starting in fall 2016, the Provost has allocated to each new ladder rank faculty at UC Merced up to $3,000 to add information sources to the UC Merced Library collection. These sources are to support a faculty member’s area of research and teaching.
This funding is available for one-time purchases and, therefore, does not apply to journal subscriptions. Examples of eligible items include books, ebooks, DVDs, maps, images, data sets, archival and manuscript material, and other digital materials. The main criteria are that the items enhance the library’s collection and are accessible by all UC Merced Library users. The funding can also be used to create new information resources; for example, in 2017 a new faculty member used his funds to digitize and add to the Library collection a set of unique photographs essential to his research.
If not used, new faculty library collection funds are swept and returned to the campus general fund on the first occurrence of June 30th following the new faculty member’s start date. In order to allow time for processing, new faculty must submit their purchase requests to the library two months before the sweep date (i.e. by May 1st).
University Librarian Haipeng Li notifies all new ladder rank faculty of this one-time funding with a welcome letter. Librarian liaisons reach out to new faculty to increase awareness of available funds.
If you have additional questions or would like to proceed with the expenditure of these funds, please consult with your library liaison.
