ProQuest's Ebook Central


July 27, 2017


As of July 26th, the Ebrary and EBL platforms has been upgraded to Ebook Central, a new, full service ebook platform that delivers an intuitive and easy-to-use research experience. Our patrons now have access to the same ebook content previously supplied through each vendor, just under a new and improved homepage with increased copy and print limits per ebook. EBL patron bookshelf contents were moved to Ebook Central automatically, while ebrary patrons will have an option to copy their ebrary bookshelves to Ebook Central upon their first login.

The period of life between teenager to young adult is a critical time for young people; full of exploration, growth and change. There are an endless number of paths to travel, and whichever is chosen has the ability to shape who someone will become. A decade ago, did you think you would be where you are now?

Ten years ago, in 2005-2006, photographer Roger J. Wyan set out to document the first individuals as they began to journey through their formative years at the first research university built in the 21st century, UC Merced. In total 220 students, mostly freshmen, were photographed. A decade later, Wyan re-photographed and interviewed 38 of the original students. The goal? Find out where life has taken them.

Wyan describes Transitions as “a remarkable narrative of an influential time in young people’s lives;" it documents a period of life that sociologists call “emerging adulthood,” defined by exploration,...

Announcing CNP eBooks

All campuses except UCSF have agreed to participate in a Demand-Driven Acquisitions eBook project for access to the CNP eBooks. This project with the China National Publications Import & Export Corporation (CNPIEC) is a one-year pilot for ebook access focused on subjects in the social sciences and humanities including history, political science, sociology, anthology, literature, philosophy, religion, classics, media studies and others. Titles have been chosen from more than 300 regular, university and society publishing houses with new titles added to Melvyl every two months.

Taylor & Francis Open Access Publishing for UC Authors

The California Digital Library has brokered a deal with Taylor & Francis via our license agreement for 2016 through 2018 granting up to a 75% discount on gold open access article publishing charges (APCs) for all UC authors. This discount applies to all articles published in Taylor & Francis Open Journals and Open Select Journals through the first 400 articles published per annum. After the limit is reached for UC as a whole, a 50% discount will be applied for the remainder of that year to all articles submitted.

Save your Artstor Digital Library notes and citations before June 1st

Artstor will be implementing some feature changes which may require users to save their work in their Digital Library. The new features are part of the release of an improved platform with a redesigned interface, streamlined features, and which runs on the same technology that powers JSTOR.

Features you may wish to save:
Personal notes and instructor notes are being retired. Artstor recommends copying and pasting this information into your image group descriptions by June 1st.
The citation generator and saved citations will be temporarily removed and added back after the new release. If you have saved citations, please download them before June 1st.
Saved searches are being retired.

UCM Librarians Recognized in LIRT Top 20 for 2016

The American Library Association’s Library Instruction Round Table (LIRT) has selected an article authored by Sara Davidson Squibb, UC Merced Library’s Head of Research & Learning Services and Susan Mikkelson, former UC Merced Instruction & Scholarly Communications Librarian and current Librarian of Merced High as one of the Top 20 Library Instruction Articles for 2016. Published in the March edition of College & Research Libraries, “Assessing the Value of Course-Embedded Information Literacy on Student Learning and Achievement” reviewed the impact of a curriculum developed by UC Merced librarians and Writing faculty that integrated information literacy into introductory composition courses to improve academic performance.
