Borrowing Privileges

Students, faculty and staff automatically have library privileges. Present your CatCard at the second floor Services Desk to check out books, DVDs and other materials from the UC Merced Library collection.

Courtesy Borrower Accounts

Free to those who qualify; ID and proof of status required. To obtain a Courtesy Borrower Account, visit the library's second floor Services Desk, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Accounts available to:

  • University of California affiliates, current dues paying members of alumni associations and California educators
  • Students, faculty and staff of the University of California
  • Retirees and emeriti of the University of California
  • Immediate family, over the age of 18, of faculty and staff of the University of California
  • Faculty and librarians from accredited institutions of higher learning in California
  • Certificated employees of California public schools

Fee Borrower Accounts

  • To obtain a Fee Borrower Account, visit the library's second floor Services Desk, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
  • Available to residents over the age of 18 with a valid CA drivers license or state-issued ID, cost $100 per year.
  • Registered degree program students of California State University or Community College, cost $25 per six months or $50 per year.
  • Individuals without a UCMNetID can use CashNet to pay for a Fee Borrow Account, but please talk with Library Staff prior to submitting payment. 

Course Resources

Course Resources are shelved behind the Library Services Desk and circulate for a two hour, library use only loan. Visit Course Resources to learn more about the Course Resources Program and to access our online submission form.

You can search for available Course Resources materials in UC Library Search by searching for the professor or specific title.

  • Students can check out two Course Resource items at a time.
  • Students can place up to two, same day holds on Course Resource items in use by other patrons. Holds expired within 30 minutes of pickup notification.
  • Course Resources accrue overdue fees at a rate of $1/minute up to a maximum charge of $60.
  • Course Resources more than 72 hours overdue are considered lost. Replacement and processing fees will be applied in addition to overdue fees.
  • Course Resource items are due 30 minutes prior to closing. Due times will be adjusted accordingly.

Returning Materials

Return items to the drop slot outside the southerly side of the library near the bulletin board, or the return box by the second floor Services Desk.

Recalled Materials

Recalled materials are items that have been requested by another UC Merced student, faculty or staff member.

  • Books and other materials are subject to recall one week after you check them out.
  • Recalled items must be returned immediately.
  • Failure to return recalled items promptly will result in suspension of borrowing privileges.

Overdue Materials

  • Borrowing privileges are suspended until overdue materials are returned.
  • Items more than 30 days overdue are considered lost and patrons are charged replacement plus processing fees.
  • Borrowing privileges are reinstated when overdue items are returned and fees are paid.

Replacement and Processing Fees

  • Lost items are billed at the replacement cost of current market price.
  • Charges outstanding for more than 30 days are referred to a collection agency.
  • Outstanding charges may result in blocked access to transcripts.

Email library@ucmerced.edu to confirm the amount due for your lost or damaged items. You will then be directed to pay Library fees through MyBill. Individuals without a UCMNetID can use CashNet

Compliance

All borrowers must comply with library policies and agree to pay fees for lost and damaged materials. Failure to comply with established policies may result in suspension of Library privileges.
