The University of California, Merced Library is marking a significant milestone, celebrating its 20th anniversary with a special exhibit titled From Foundation to Future: Twenty Years of the UC Merced Library. Running from September 2, 2025, through June 1, 2026, the exhibit provides a unique opportunity to explore the Library's evolution alongside the university's own journey, which began with its first undergraduate class in fall 2005.
The multi-floor exhibit, with its core content on the second floor, delves into the Library's foundational years and its growth. Visitors will be able to trace its development from key "firsts" dating back to 2001, to the vital role played by early supporters and champions who helped build the institution.
The second-floor display highlights decisions that shaped the Library, including the design of its physical space and the deliberate process of building its physical and digital collections. The exhibit also shines a spotlight on the people who brought the Library to life, featuring staff highlights and the invaluable contributions of student assistants, with alumni voices offering reflections on their time there.
Beyond the physical collection, the exhibit showcases the Library's dedication to learning, research, and outreach. It details the development of its archives and the crucial work of digitizing special collections, making unique resources accessible to a wider audience. As the title suggests, the exhibit is not just a look back. It invites the community to contemplate the next chapter in the Library's history.
The exhibit is located throughout the Kolligian Library building’s east wing. The 1st floor elevator lobby offers an exhibit preview with the main content featured near the second-floor bookstacks. Head to the third and fourth floors for additional exhibit cases with materials that further illuminate the Library's history and its connection to the university.
An opening reception will be held Wednesday, September 3 at 2pm. RSVPs are appreciated.
