Dear Colleagues & Friends,

We’re thrilled to share that the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Infrastructure and Capacity Building Challenge Grant has been reinstated. Following a three-month pause, we are now working closely with campus partners to secure a construction firm and begin work this fall.

UC Merced was awarded $750,000 from the NEH for this important infrastructure initiative, with matching funds generously provided by Chancellor Juan Sánchez Muñoz from philanthropic gifts.

The grant supports the construction of secure, climate-controlled archival and special collections storage within the Kolligian Library building. A key feature of the project is the installation of a dedicated HVAC system, designed to ensure the long-term preservation of unique materials through precise climate control. With funding now restored, we anticipate completing the renovation in 2026.

Before notice of grant termination in April, we collaborated with Darden Architects and campus colleagues to finalize design and construction documents. Thanks to this foundational work, we’re positioned to proceed efficiently into the construction phase.

We extend heartfelt thanks to everyone who offered encouragement and shared insights during this time. We’re excited to resume progress on this transformative capital project, which will establish a secure, research-driven archive that welcomes scholars, students, and community members alike.

This grant meaningfully expands our capacity to collect and preserve primary sources that reflect the cultural, social, and environmental heritage of the Sierra Nevada and Central Valley.
