New InterLibrary Services Coordinator

The Library is pleased to announce Dolly Lopez is the Library’s new InterLibrary Services Coordinator. This position was previously occupied by recently retired UCM original staff member Denise Sawatzky. As InterLibrary Services Coordinator, Dolly will manage UC Merced’s resource sharing activities with the other UC libraries and libraries worldwide.

Dolly has been working at UC Merced as the InterLibrary Services Assistant since April 2013, and previously worked for 3 years in the ILL department as a student at UC Davis. Dolly earned a Bachelors of Science degree in Human Development from UC Davis and is currently enrolled in the San Jose State University’s Master of Library and Information Science program. Prior to coming to UC Merced, Dolly worked as an AmeriCorps Health Educator in Madera, CA.

RefWorks - New Version Available

RefWorks is upgrading its platform and the new version is now available to UC Merced students, faculty, and staff.  We are currently in a soft launch phase which means you can continue to use the current platform or transition your citations to the new platform.  Please see this RefWorks Upgrade guide for details on the new RefWorks and its transition including recommendations, a summary of benefits, and FAQs. 

NCBI will be transitioning to using HTTPS-only protocols

NCBI, the host server for the PubMed database and others, will be transitioning to using HTTPS-only protocols on September 30, 2016. This change may impact software that uses NCBI APIs such as the E-utilities or NCBI software toolkits such as the C/C++ and SRA toolkits.

If you are using software that uses API calls to the NCBI servers, please visit http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/home/develop/https-guidance.shtml for more information and actions you can take to mitigate any issues with your software that may arise after the transition.

Yosemite Mural Display

The library is pleased to announce the installation of a second stained glass mural by artist William Poulson. The mural, Tissiack, is a stunning depiction of Yosemite in fall, featuring a view of Half Dome during sunset. The murals are part of William Poulson's Yosemite Mural Project, which aims to showcase Yosemite in each season. Tissiack joins Poulson's winter mural, The Chief, on the 3rd floor of the Library by room KL371. Both murals stand over 8' wide, by 14' tall.

ProQuest Critical Maintenance

On Saturday, August 20th, ProQuest will be upgrading its systems infrastructure to improve performance, security, and overall reliability of its products. The maintenance window is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM Pacific Time and will last for eight (8) hours. This will impact some databases on the ProQuest platform, such as RefWorks and ProQuest Congressional, which may not be available during this time. We apologize for any inconvenience and hope this interruption will create minimal disruption to our users’ research.

UC Merced Library Welcomes Lisa Vallen

Archivist Lisa Vallen has joined the UC Merced Library to work with UC Cooperative Extension Offices in Merced, Ventura, and Humboldt to assess, preserve, and provide access to these records and materials.

Lisa has her Masters of Science in Library and Information Sciences from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign with a certificate in special collections.  While at the University of Illinois, Lisa helped preserve their physical collection, digitized theses and dissertations, and processed part of the H.G. Wells Collection. She has her BA in art history and politics from Lake Forest College.  Lisa spent the summer of 2015 studying French Museology at the Ecole du Louvre in Paris.
 
Lisa is a co-creater of the Mushiboshi Project, where they are researching ethnographic preservation practices and looking at how libraries can apply these low tech options to their own stewardship and promote their use to the general public.

New Resources via CDL

A variety of new resources have been added to UC Merced’s online collection via the California Digital Library this summer.

UC Merced now has access to JSTOR’s Arts & Sciences XV Collection, adding an additional 150 titles to the platform by 2018. Arts & Sciences XV provides extensive coverage in the humanities, social sciences and sciences, including literature, film, art, music, religion, classical studies, history, education, economics, political science, and sociology.

AnthroSource, which was previously licensed by UC Merced, is now included in CDL’s systemwide Wiley contract for the next three years.  AnthroSource provides access to more than 100 years of anthropological knowledge, and currently includes 32 anthropological publications from AAA comprising journals, books, monographs, bulletins and newsletters.

The Declassified Documents Reference System has been released and is now live on the Artemis platform from Gale Cengage as U.S. Declassified Documents Online. USDDO provides access to a broad range of previously classified federal records encompassing the 20th and 21st centuries. This collection brings together many sensitive documents from all the presidential libraries and a variety of executive agencies in a single database.
