UC Merced made its first appearance at the annual World Ag Expo in Tulare earlier this month to spread the word about the library’s new digitization project to collect and preserve 100 years of data, documents and photos from the UC’s Cooperative Extension.
The new project will collect 100 years’ worth of reports and historic photographs from 20 California counties — in the Central Valley, along the coast, up north at the edges of the Sierra and along the southern border — and will geocode all the records.
Emily Lin, UC Merced Library’s head of Digital Curation and Scholarship, along with colleagues from the Library, Admissions, CITRIS and Development, and students from the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE), staffed UC Merced’s booth in the education-and careers pavilion, where they were in good company with other colleges and universities such as UC Davis, Fresno State and campuses from Utah, Oregon and Arizona.
Beginning on Saturday, May 5th at 9 p.m. through Friday, May 11th at 6 p.m., KL 355 will be open around the clock as a 24/7 study space for finals. During the Library’s after-hours, KL 355 can be accessed through the West Wing stairwell or elevator and the room will be staffed by Campus Security Officers.
This 24/7 finals study space is a pilot program and is made possible thanks to Student Affairs, UC Merced Police Department, and the UC Merced Library.

Over one million historical images, texts, recordings, and other items are now accessible in the statewide digital resource aggregation represented by Calisphere, and soon in the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA). This collection contains unique objects from over 200 libraries, museums and archives in California. At its current rate of expansion, it will soon be one of the largest contributors of DPLA’s national-level aggregation, offering students, researchers, and the public more and more access to the digitized history and special collections of the state of California.
The Center for Sacramento History Photo Collection holds the honor for pushing Calisphere over the one million mark. The photo below, “Immigrant Raid Protest, 5/6/1982” shows how this collection provides historical context for many relevant issues facing our state and our nation today.
