SPIE Digital Library moves to new platform

SPIE Digital Library is moving from the Silverchair platform to a new SPIE Digital Library platform on Tuesday, August 15, 2017. New features on the platform will include better search functionality, expanded taxonomy, full text HTML proceedings and eBooks, upgraded presentation videos from SPIE conferences, and a mobile friendly design.  Details on these features are available here. Please note: Existing Publications Alerts and Content Alerts that were previously set up on the Silverchair platform will continue with no action required. However, Search Alerts that users have set up will not be migrated to the new platform. Search Alerts can be recreated by doing a search and then clicking a link that schedules them to receive future alerts for new content that matches the search criteria.

LexisNexus Academic Becomes Nexis Uni™

The transition from LexisNexis Academic to its redesigned successor Nexis Uni™ is now under way, and UC campuses are among the first of subscribers with IP-based access to Uni already activated.  UC will maintain access to both Academic and Uni through October 1, 2017 after which the former will be deactivated.

Nexis Uni™ incorporates a large search box that accepts either natural language or complex Boolean searches across the entire collection, making it an ideal tool for both novice and advanced researchers. Like LexisNexus Academic, Nexis Uni™ features more than 15,000 news, legal and business sources but with improved features such as the ability to create customized home pages, folder creation for group research projects, a predictive search function to better define search terms, and task-based search pods to help guide students with their research.

Access Alert - Roper iPOLL

On Thursday, August 10th from 8pm to 11pm PDT, the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research will be performing systems maintenance which may make online iPOLL searches and dataset downloads unavailable to our patrons. New Licensed Resource: STMnetBASE eBooks from Taylor & Francis

The UC Libraries have acquired the STMnetBASE ebook collection from CRC Press/Taylor & Francis for the next three years, 2017-2019. Comprised of 16 new collections, it replaces the previous licensing of individual collections like ENVIROnetBASE, MATHnetBASE and STATSnetBASE and includes the ENGnetBASE evidence-based selection (EBS) pilot that has been managed by the physical sciences and engineering group during the last four years. STMnetBASE allows for unlimited simultaneous access and perpetual rights to the full 2017 collection of approximately 1,146 books to be published annually, focused on STEM areas.

ProQuest's Ebook Central

As of July 26th, the Ebrary and EBL platforms has been upgraded to Ebook Central, a new, full service ebook platform that delivers an intuitive and easy-to-use research experience. Our patrons now have access to the same ebook content previously supplied through each vendor, just under a new and improved homepage with increased copy and print limits per ebook. EBL patron bookshelf contents were moved to Ebook Central automatically, while ebrary patrons will have an option to copy their ebrary bookshelves to Ebook Central upon their first login.

On July 25-26th, the ebrary and EBL platforms will be upgraded to Ebook Central, a new, full service ebook platform. Transition to the new platform will occur during the evening hours on July 25th and midday hours on the 26th. Users may experience a brief interruption in ebook availability during those times. 

Access Alert - Proquest

On Saturday, 29 July 2017, ProQuest will be upgrading its systems infrastructure to improve performance, security, and overall reliability of its products. The maintenance window is scheduled to begin at 12 noon PDT and will last for eight (9) hours. This will impact some databases on the ProQuest platform, such as RefWorks and ProQuest Congressional, which may not be available during this time. Transitions: Portraits of a Decade Long Journey

The period of life between teenager to young adult is a critical time for young people; full of exploration, growth and change. There are an endless number of paths to travel, and whichever is chosen has the ability to shape who someone will become. A decade ago, did you think you would be where you are now?

Ten years ago, in 2005-2006, photographer Roger J. Wyan set out to document the first individuals as they began to journey through their formative years at the first research university built in the 21st century, UC Merced. In total 220 students, mostly freshmen, were photographed. A decade later, Wyan re-photographed and interviewed 38 of the original students. The goal? Find out where life has taken them.

Wyan describes Transitions as “a remarkable narrative of an influential time in young people’s lives;" it documents a period of life that sociologists call “emerging adulthood,” defined by exploration, instability, self-focus and optimism for the future. The exhibit sheds light on the process of coming of age that the youngest University of California campus and its student body have experienced together.

The exhibit consists of a series of black and white photographic portraits taken ten years apart and is currently being displayed at the Merced Multicultural Arts Center in downtown Merced until September 9, 2017. On October 9th, the exhibit will open at UC Merced  in the Kolligian Library and be displayed through December, 2017.
