Over one million historical images, texts, recordings, and other items are now accessible in the statewide digital resource aggregation represented by Calisphere, and soon in the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA). This collection contains unique objects from over 200 libraries, museums and archives in California. At its current rate of expansion, it will soon be one of the largest contributors of DPLA’s national-level aggregation, offering students, researchers, and the public more and more access to the digitized history and special collections of the state of California.

The Center for Sacramento History Photo Collection holds the honor for pushing Calisphere over the one million mark. The photo below, “Immigrant Raid Protest, 5/6/1982” shows how this collection provides historical context for many relevant issues facing our state and our nation today.

CDL Joins Royal Society Open Access Membership

CDL has recently joined the Royal Society Open Access Membership, an agreement under which UC-affiliated authors from any UC campus get a 25% discount off of Article Processing Charges (APCs) paid to Royal Society for open access publication during 2018.

Royal Society’s journal content includes many traditional subscription journals, for which authors may opt to pay an APC to make their article Open Access, along with two full Open Access journals, for which an APC is needed for publication. The discount applies to APCs paid for either type of journal, with no restrictions to the number of times this discount may be used throughout the year.

Authors hoping to publish Open Access and use this discount should submit their articles to Royal Society journals as normal. Once the post-acceptance process commences, the author should specify that they wish to pay an APC for open access publication. Authors may then identify themselves as an affiliate of a member institution to have the discount applied to their APC.

Additional information on the Royal Society publishing discount is available on UC’s Office of Scholarly Communication website.
