Audience: Faculty and Academic Staff

 

Join us for a faculty workshop presented by the Open Textbook Network (OTN) to learn how open textbooks eliminate the financial barriers that can prohibit access to educational materials, and benefit student success, pedagogical practice and social justice on campus. 

By attending this workshop, faculty will have the opportunity to complete a short review of an open textbook from the Open Textbook Library and become eligible to receive a $75 Amazon electronic gift card.  

Coffee and a light breakfast provided.

Naxos Music Library 3 Platform

Users of UC-licensed Naxos Music Library will now be redirected to the new Naxos Music Library 3 platform.  This version combines a new design, faster loading times, built in player (no longer a pop up window), educational resources, and a continually growing library of classical recordings. Some improvements include:

A left streamlined sidebar with a neater, cleaner look.

Player on every page which can slide in and out with just 1 click.

Quicker page loading and Keyword and Advanced Search.

Capability to stream videos related to an album.

A dedicated search box on the Composers and Artists section

Expanded Access to the New York Times

UC Merced patrons now have subscriber-level access to NYTimes.com via any device, anywhere in the world.  This expanded access includes many new features:

•             All-digital access to nytimes.com, from 1851 to right now

•             Access to Times Machine, an interactive replica of The New York Times as it appeared in print from 1851 to 2002

•             Video features, documentary, ancillary reporting, and Closed Captioning.

•             Full multimedia offerings.

•             Video features in the Opinion and Arts sections

•             Spanish and Chinese Language Editions + multi-language articles

•             Access to California Today, featuring news important to Californians

•             Access to The New York Times in Education curricular resources which provide faculty with ideas to easily incorporate The New York Times content.

Once patrons authenticate on campus or through VPN, students have access until graduation, while faculty and staff will re-authenticate annually.

New Updated PubMed

A new updated version of PubMed is now available and will become the default in spring 2020, replacing the legacy version. The updated version’s layout offers better support for accessing PubMed content with small-screen devices such as mobile phones and tablets. PubMed continues to include the features you depend on for searching, saving and sharing your results, but now defaults to Best Match sort to help find the most relevant articles more easily.

UC Merced Library Faculty Author Series: Dr. Iris Ruiz

Please join us for an author talk featuring Continuing Lecturer, Dr. Iris Ruiz. Dr. Ruiz will discuss her new book, Viva Nuestro Caucus: Rewriting Forgotten Pages of Our Caucus (Working and Writing for Change). The book is a written history of the Latinx Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English, and of the College Composition and Communications Conference, and includes interviews, an annotated Caucus archive, and a working bibliography of publications by Caucus members.

The Carter Joseph Abrescy and Larry Kranich Library Award for Student Research Excellence was established in 2017 to recognize an outstanding undergraduate researcher at UC Merced. Awardees will be recognized at a reception in spring 2020. Interested applicants should read through the eligibility criteria & awardee requirements prior to submitting an application.
