The Americas Underground: Where our Past and Present Meet in the Dark

Tue, March 31, 2015 12:00 AM
Tue, March 31, 2015

Running from March 23 – April 30, 2015, The Americas Underground explores the various ways in which caves, rockshelters, mines, and other uses of the ‘underground’ have been perceived across the Americas. The exhibit addresses the theme of continuity and change in underground practices through time with the hopes of shedding light on these 'dark and scary' places. The exhibit demonstrates how caves have provided spaces for ritual and social practices throughout history, while practices such as archaeology, mining, caving, and tourism have emerged in different areas in different times and been slowly added to the repertoire. Photography, cultural objects and artifacts collected from ancient and modern contexts by UC Merced scholars and California residents demonstrate how modern practices intersect and overlap with past practices in interesting, but sometimes conflicting ways.

The exhibit has been organized by Marieka Arksey, Ph.D. Student in SSHA at UC Merced. It is made possible with generous assistance and funding from the following: UC Merced’s Center for Humanities, UC Merced Library, California State Parks: California State Gem and Mineral Mining Museum Mariposa, Mark Aldenderfer, Holley Moyes, Kathleen Hull, Patrick Wilkinson, Sarah Spoljaric.

Release of the New Calisphere

Wed, September 16, 2015 12:00 AM

Calisphere has released their new website. Currently in beta mode, it includes all of the existing content from the old Calisphere site, plus 70% more digital items from libraries, archives, and museums throughout the University of California system and across the state.

Compiling more than 400,000 digital photographs, maps, diaries, letters, drawings, newspapers, oral histories, sound recordings, moving images, and other formats, the new site also boasts a more user-centered design, and great new features:

* Fully responsive design, accessible on tablets and mobile devices

* Collection and institution browse and landing pages

* Filters for type, decade, collection, and institution

* View and sort options for further customizing

* A “sticky” search results carousel that tracks a user’s search while on a specific item

Also included on the new site are UC Merced’s first set of costume designs by Dunya Ramicova, the Japanese Assembly Center Newsletters and other local history items.

CDL will be adding more collections and functionality over the coming months with the goal of replacing the old site in late 2016.
