Open Access Week Schedule of Events

The University of California issued the following press release last Friday:
"The Academic Senate of the University of California has passed an Open Access Policy, ensuring that future research articles authored by faculty at all 10 campuses of UC will be made available to the public at no charge. "The Academic Council's adoption of this policy on July 24, 2013, came after a six-year process culminating in two years of formal review and revision," said Robert Powell, chair of the Academic Council. "Council's intent is to make these articles widely — and freely — available in order to advance research everywhere." Articles will be available to the public without charge via eScholarship (UC's open access repository) in tandem with their publication in scholarly journals. Open access benefits researchers, educational institutions, businesses, research funders and the public by accelerating the pace of research, discovery and innovation and contributing to the mission of advancing knowledge and encouraging new ideas and services." The Royal Society of Chemistry recently launched the Gold for Gold initiative to encourage faculty who publish in RSC journals to make their articles open access. This program offers voucher codes that enable Merced researchers to publish their paper in RSC journals free of charge without paying the normal open access article publication fees.
Publishing open access makes your work easier to find, read and disseminate. We hope faculty will consider taking advantage of this opportunity. Voucher codes are available on a first-come first-served basis and must be used before 12/31/13.
For more information on how to apply for a voucher, please visit the RSC Voucher Web Page.

California college students frustrated with the high cost of textbooks got some good news recently, when Governor Jerry Brown signed legislation for a proposal to create a website where textbooks are available for free. The development of affordable open source textbooks for targeted courses would help students attending California Community Colleges, California State Universities, and University of California campuses.
As part of the Graduate Student Lyceum Series of workshops, The UC Merced Library will host a session during the first week of April focused on Academic Publishing.
