Exhibit: My Family Through Clothing

2010

My Family Through Clothing

“My Family through Clothing” is an assignment created to provide students enrolled in Arts 101, 102 (History of Clothing, Costume and Fashion) and Arts 103 (History of Ethnic Clothing) with tools to understand their own heritage through the study of clothing, costumes and fashion. The assignment is structured to teach students to appreciate the fact that every aspect of life, even something apparently as mundane as clothing, has the potential to illuminate important academic fields of study such as history, anthropology, sociology, and psychology. The assignment has served as an impetus for students to examine how cultural traditions (represented by what they and their ancestors and relatives have worn) have influenced their own cultural beliefs.
