Case Study -- Southern Sierra Critical Zone Observatory

The need:

Professor Roger Bales has collected seven years’ worth of data from the Southern Sierra Critical Zone Observatory and needed to find a permanent home for the data, in particular because the sustainability of the CZO’s data archiving program was not secure.

What the Library did:

We worked with the data manager on his team to create metadata and readme files to describe the data and set up a process for to deposit the data in the Merritt preservation repository at the California Digital Library. We also explained the significance of registering for ORCIDs to be included in the published metadata.

The impact:

The dataset archived in Merritt is also available to the public through UC’s Dash data sharing service, and has a citable digital object identifier (DOI). Dash provides statistics on the number of views and downloads of the dataset.
