The UC Merced Library’s Archives and Special Collections supports the teaching mission of the University of California by encouraging the use of our collections in course curricula. We are available to provide in-class instruction for the following topics:
- How to identify, find, and use primary sources
- Subject- or research-specific class sessions focused on holdings in our collections
- Guidance on how to conduct archival research
Class Visits to Archives and Special Collections
We are delighted to offer facilitated class visits to our Archives and Special Collections, where students can delve into the rich tapestry of history firsthand. These visits not only enhance historical understanding but also cultivate a connection to primary resources and how they are used in constructing historical narratives.
Each session begins with a brief introduction to handling archival materials, emphasizing the importance of careful preservation and respectful handling. Students learn essential techniques—such as when to use gloves and proper document support—so they can explore these invaluable resources safely and responsibly.
If you are an instructor and are interested in an instruction session, please reach out as soon as possible to start the process of selecting a date and identifying collections you wish to use.

The room is set up for a presentation and introduction on handling archival materials. Afterward, we will leave the instructional space to navigate to the Reading Room, where students will have an opportunity to directly handle materials from our collections.

- You may take photos as long as the flash is off.
- If you are uncertain how to handle any of the materials, please ask us!
