UC Merced Library to Celebrate Opening of New Data Hub

Wed, August 27, 2025 9:00 AM

The UC Merced Library will officially open its new Library Data Hub on Thursday, September 11, with a celebration from 3:00 to 4:30 pm on the third floor West of the Kolligian Library.

The hub brings together two dedicated lab spaces designed to strengthen support for data-driven research and teaching. The Data Lab (KL 336) will provide resources for foundational coding education, while the GIS Center (KL 330) will focus on geospatial research and mapping. Together, the facilities will offer students, faculty, and researchers new opportunities to expand their skills and explore complex questions through data.

Opening remarks and a welcome are scheduled for 3:30 p.m., followed by time for visitors to tour the new spaces, connect with colleagues, and learn more about the services and support available. Light refreshments will be provided.

All are welcome to drop by to explore the new hub. RSVPs to this grand opening are appreciated.

White Paper from LASC Now Available

Thu, December 21, 2023 2:50 PM

The UC Merced Library White Paper (June 2023) was written in response to a charge from former Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Gregg Camfield to the UC Merced Academic Senate Committee on Library and Scholarly Communication (LASC) to articulate the Library’s contributions to UC Merced’s mission of research, teaching, and service.

The White Paper highlights selected Library activities and aligns them with the campus’ Strategic Planning Goals; it does not showcase all Library services and contributions. Included recommendations suggest how an investment in the UC Merced Library can support the ongoing advancement of the university’s mission. The body of the White Paper follows an Executive Summary (pgs. 3-8) and Synopsis (9).

New Dryad Platform

Fri, September 27, 2019 12:55 PM

This past May, in an effort to drive adoption by meeting researchers in their existing workflows and encourage further promotion of UC’s repositories by publishers, CDL announced its formal partnership between itself and Dryad, an international disciplinary repository for data curation. This partnership has now launched the new Dryad Platform focused on the features which best support the researching community’s ever-changing needs.  Some of these new features include:

Support of datasets as part of a journal submission or submitted independently

Uploading of data from cloud storage or lab servers

Updating or versioning of data at any time in the process

Updating and display of standardized data usage and citation statistics for each published dataset

The new Dryad platform is just the beginning for the partnership to make data publishing both robust and seamless. Integrations with other publishing platforms, as well as data analysis and computing spaces are currently in process.

Protocols.io Pilot

Fri, June 7, 2019 2:15 PM

The UC system has entered into a pilot for the use of protocols.io — an open access repository for research methods. Running for a three-year period from June 1, 2019 through May 31, 2022, the pilot removes all cost barriers, allowing UC researchers to test the uses of protocols.io for private collaboration and for use in classrooms.

By initiating this pilot, UC hopes to increase management and tracking of research methods on each campus, allowing for better reporting and more reproducible publications from researchers. Follow this link for more details about the pilot and protocols.io.

Library Hosts Successful Software Carpentry Workshop

Mon, April 1, 2019 1:40 PM

The UC Merced Library organized a two-day Software Carpentry workshop during Spring Break that covered Unix, Git, and Python. The workshop was given by two excellent instructors, Kate Barron (Data Services Librarian at San Jose State University's Martin Luther King, Jr. Library) and Avishek Kumar (Research/Data Scientist at the University of Chicago's Center for Data Science and Public Policy).

The helpers, those who volunteer to attend Carpentry workshops to assist and answer students' questions, are equally valuable! We would like to thank Matthias Bussonier (Research Facilitator at UC Merced and co-developer of Project Jupyter), Sarvani Chadalapaka (High Performance Computing Administrator at UC Merced), Akshay Paropkari (graduate student in Quantitative and Systems Biology), and Jasper Toscani Field (another graduate student in Quantitative and Systems Biology).

Thanks additionally to our dedicated library staff who handled catering, travel, and IT support, and finally, thanks to all of our attendees! We hope you enjoyed this Software Carpentry workshop.

For information about upcoming Carpentries workshops, check out our page. You can also sign up to be trained as an official Carpentries instructor or add your name to a list of potential helpers.

Video: Research Data Matters

Fri, May 13, 2016 12:00 AM

Why is research data management important and what is the impact of good data management practices? An introductory video released by the UC Libraries addresses these questions by incorporating the voices and testimonials of UC faculty.

The video is the first of a proposed series developed by the UC Libraries Data Curation Common Knowledge Group. It features UC Merced Vice Provost and Graduate Dean Marjorie Zatz and was produced by the UC Merced Communications video production team.

Viewership and feedback will be used to assess and inform future development of the series. Questions or feedback can be submitted directly to the project leads, Head, Digital Assets, Emily Lin (elin@ucmerced.edu) and UC Riverside Engineering Librarian, Kat Koziar (katherine.koziar@ucr.edu).

If you are a principal investigator preparing a grant proposal or developing your research project and would like help with data management planning, contact curation@ucmerced.edu. The Library would be happy to provide consultation for your needs.
