Reveal Digital's Independent Voices collection

Mon, October 26, 2015 4:30 PM

California Digital Library has recently licensed 800 titles offered by Reveal Digital from their Independent Voices collection.  This collection is a cooperative effort by libraries across the country to fund the digitization of alternative press content from their special collections. The newspapers and journals represent a wide spectrum of groups from the 1960s through 1980s and include feminist journals (like Bread & Roses), counterculture newspapers (like Berkeley Tribe), LGBT publications, and small literary presses.

Once digitization is complete, and a brief embargo period ceases, all content will become open access.

Repaired Soft Seating is Like New!

Thu, September 24, 2015 10:45 AM

In winter 2014 the Library assessed the condition of all soft seating furniture in the building. We looked for ripped or torn seams, stuffing that was bursting out, and general repairs that needed to be made to couches and fabric chairs. It was nearly 10 years since the furniture had been purchased for the campus opening.  It was apparent to us (and the students!) that some pieces were in dire need of mending. We identified 50 pieces of furniture that required attention and agreed that 30 pieces be sent for repair in summer 2015.  We recently received part of the order back and, needless to say, the fabrics look fantastic. The furniture that was returned looks brand new. We hope that you enjoy it!  If you have questions, comments or concerns about anything in the library please do not hesitate to email us at library@ucmerced.edu.

HathiTrust Print Disabilities Access

Wed, August 19, 2015

The UC Merced Library is pleased to offer special access to the HathiTrust Digital Library for students, staff and faculty with visual impairments or print disabilities. The HathiTrust Digital Library is a partnership of research and academic institutions, and contains over 10 million digitized volumes.

Through a designated proxy, the UC Merced Library can supply eligible patrons with an accessible PDF file of in-copyright materials that are available in both HathiTrust and the UC Merced Library collections. By collaborating with the Office of Disability Services, these files can be converted into a format consistent with the patron’s access needs.

For items not available through HathiTrust, in-print items owned by UC Merced can be digitized. Please contact the Office of Disability Services at 209-228-6996 to obtain a referral for HathiTrust access and digitization requests.  These services are available to those registered with the Office of Disability Services.
