Photography Exhibit “De Mis Manos a Su Mesa” Recognizes the Hands that Harvest

Wed, September 10, 2025 3:25 PM

Nancy Burke, Professor of Public Health at UC Merced and Claudia Corchado, the Deputy Executive Director of Cultiva Central Valley, have collaborated to mount an exhibit showcasing the images and stories of 12 Mexican American farmworkers who have worked and lived in the Central Valley.

“A quiet act of recognition,” the photography project presents the intimacy of farm labor and recognizes the dignity of the immigrant and undocumented workers who harvest the food grown in the Valley.

The project came about due to the experience of over two dozen farmworkers who have struggled to maintain employment in hazardous working conditions and are pushed out of work with limited or no access to healthcare. All photos were taken by Claudia Corchado, who captured the embodiment of their sacrifices and hard work.

The exhibit is on display in the Library’s third floor reading room, KL 355.

An opening reception will be held in KL232 on Wednesday, September 17, 4-5:30 PM. Please register.

Library Opening Exhibit Reception Recap - Celebrating 20 Years

Wed, September 10, 2025 11:05 AM

We enjoyed hosting over 100 attendees at a reception to celebrate our 20-year anniversary and the opening of our exhibit From Foundation to Future: Twenty Years of the UC Merced Library

Together we visited and reflected on our connections to the Library and the campus. Attendees included those who advocated for UC Merced long before the campus opened to its first class of undergraduates on September 5, 2005. Our program featured remarks from our founding University Librarian R Bruce Miller read by Joe Ameen, Research and Learning Librarian and Class of 2009 alum.

Before serving as UC Merced’s founding University Librarian (UL), Miller was an Associate University Librarian at UC San Diego and an early champion in the library world for 24/7 full-text online information resources for research universities. Beyond the opportunity to translate this theory of information access into reality, Miller summed up his attraction to UC Merced:

So, what drew me to UC Merced? That is a simple question. Opportunity. I saw that the moment was ripe to create a 21st century library for a premier research university. I was excited about the mission of the University to reach out to an underserved population. I saw the potential to rapidly create a model for other research libraries to emulate… The main thing is that I saw the chance to create something that really mattered. And that happened.

Miller started at UC Merced in 2001 and retired ten years later (2011). Reflecting on his years as UL, he described it as

all fun and enjoyable. And exhausting. And crazy. I had never worked so hard and had never felt so much responsibility, but I also had never been so rewarded for getting it right. I loved every moment.

Donald Barclay, Librarian Emeritus and a close colleague of Miller’s, highlighted key memories about the opening of UC Merced and the Library—from the Wells Fargo wagon drawn by four mules up Scholars Lane for the campus’ opening convocation to students entering and exiting the Kolligian Library building for classes through the fire escapes since the lantern was still under construction.

Barclay emphasized the incredible value of this UC campus and its library, both for those initial students and students to come.

I do believe looking back at our 20 years that the university, not just the library, has done so much good for the state and the nation and the world and especially for the students who came here. And, whatever happens in the future, I will always be proud of that and everybody who was involved.

Sara Davidson Squibb ended with final remarks to note significant dates that led to UC Merced’s establishment and the Library’s founding. The UC Regents first authorized planning for a new UC campus in 1998, and 2003 when the Library’s groundbreaking ceremony took place.

She encouraged visitors to explore the Library’s exhibit, which has content on display on all four floors. The Library’s story is featured on the 2nd floor with Library “firsts”; recognition of key library supporters; design decisions; physical and digital collection building; staff highlights; and reflections from former library student assistants. Guests also had the opportunity to post their ideas for a Library 20 years from now. The 1st, 3rd and 4th floors include exhibit cases with materials ranging from a model of the Kolligian Library building to aerial photos taken weeks and days prior to the campus opening.

The reception concluded with celebratory cake and ongoing conversation. Thank you to our guests who made the effort to join us. It was fun to visit with community members, faculty, current and former staff, students, and colleagues beyond our UC Merced family.  We even captured a photo of UC Merced Library staff who were here in 2005.

We’ll end with a final remark from R Bruce Miller.

I often think of each and everyone of you on my founding team. I thank all of you who are still here nurturing the dream. I offer hugs and heartfelt congratulations for what you have accomplished.

UC Merced Welcomes Acclaimed Author Mark Arax as Inaugural Writer-in-Residence

Tue, September 9, 2025 3:30 PM

The UC Merced Library and the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts (SSHA) are pleased to announce that award-winning author and journalist Mark Arax will serve as UC Merced’s inaugural Writer in Residence for the 2025–2026 academic year.

Arax, often described as a “21st Century John Steinbeck,” has spent decades chronicling California through essays, history, biography, and investigative journalism. His national bestseller, The Dreamt Land: Chasing Water and Dust Across California, has been recognized as one of the most important works ever written about the West. Both The Dreamt Land and his earlier book, The King of California, have been named by The New York Times to its list of the best California literature of the past 150 years.

Arax will deliver an opening lecture on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, from 3:30–5:30 p.m. in Classroom and Office Building 2, Room 110. His talk will explore the paradox of California’s ambitions -- striving to be a global leader in sustainability while simultaneously pursuing policies of growth, resource extraction, and artificial intelligence that put both the environment and humanity at risk.

The event will feature an interactive Q&A session and a reception. Attendees will also have the chance to receive a free copy of The Dreamt Land.

Advance registration is appreciated

The Writer-in-Residence program reflects UC Merced's commitment to engaging students and the community in conversations about literature, culture, and the pressing issues of our time.

A 20-Year Journey: UC Merced Library Celebrates a Milestone

Thu, August 21, 2025 8:30 PM

The University of California, Merced Library is marking a significant milestone, celebrating its 20th anniversary with a special exhibit titled From Foundation to Future: Twenty Years of the UC Merced Library. Running from September 2, 2025, through June 1, 2026, the exhibit provides a unique opportunity to explore the Library's evolution alongside the university's own journey, which began with its first undergraduate class in fall 2005.

The multi-floor exhibit, with its core content on the second floor, delves into the Library's foundational years and its growth. Visitors will be able to trace its development from key "firsts" dating back to 2001, to the vital role played by early supporters and champions who helped build the institution.

The second-floor display highlights decisions that shaped the Library, including the design of its physical space and the deliberate process of building its physical and digital collections. The exhibit also shines a spotlight on the people who brought the Library to life, featuring staff highlights and the invaluable contributions of student assistants, with alumni voices offering reflections on their time there.

Beyond the physical collection, the exhibit showcases the Library's dedication to learning, research, and outreach. It details the development of its archives and the crucial work of digitizing special collections, making unique resources accessible to a wider audience. As the title suggests, the exhibit is not just a look back. It invites the community to contemplate the next chapter in the Library's history.

The exhibit is located throughout the Kolligian Library building’s east wing. The 1st floor elevator lobby offers an exhibit preview with the main content featured near the second-floor bookstacks. Head to the third and fourth floors for additional exhibit cases with materials that further illuminate the Library's history and its connection to the university.

An opening reception will be held Wednesday, September 3 at 2pm. RSVPs are appreciated.
