LibraryCAVE Brings Virtual Reality and Big Data Into the Classroom Author: University Communications January 19, 2018 Professor Nicola Lercari is leading his students on a tour of Palenque, the ancient Mesoamerican city that flourished at the peak of Maya civilization. They’re exploring the altar atop the Temple of the Cross, inspecting it from all angles and scrutinizing every detail. But they’re not in Mexico. Lercari and his students are on the second floor of the UC Merced Library, standing before a triptych of high-definition monitors, which they view through 3-D glasses. Lercari navigates the first-person, 360-degree panoramic tour using an Xbox controller. Passers-by stop to ask questions. “It’s a new class,” explains teaching assistant Anais Guillem. “World Heritage 110: 3-D Modeling Cultural Heritage. And this is the LibraryCAVE.” The LibraryCAVE is a smaller version of UC Merced’s Wide-Area Visualization Environment (WAVE) system, a 20-screen VR multiplex that allows researchers to navigate interactive 3-D renderings of complex structures. Scholarship Opportunity: Library Award for Student Research Excellence January 16, 2018 The Carter Joseph Abrescy and Larry Kranich Library Award for Student Research Excellence was established in 2017 to recognize outstanding undergraduate research at UC Merced. The award recognizes a research paper or project produced for a credit-bearing course within the last 12 months that demonstrates effective use of library resources. A committee of faculty and librarians will review applications and select awardees. A total of $1,000 will be awarded each year; no more than two awards of $500 each will be awarded in a given year. Duke University Press Journals Move to Silverchair Platform Author: Sarah Sheets December 6, 2017 Duke University Press Journals has transitioned from Highwire to the Silverchair platform as of late November 2017. This transition to Silverchair will provide a more integrated user experience for all humanities and social sciences content from Duke University Press, granting researchers more opportunities to discover related works and other content relevant to their needs. The new site is also natively mobile, adapting to devices of any size. |

Oxford Updates Biography & Music/Art Databases Author: Sarah Sheets December 5, 2017 Oxford University Press (OUP) is in the process of updating a number of their database sites. American National Biography Online and Oxford Dictionary of National Biography were updated in late November 2017. Oxford Music Online and Oxford Art Online will update by December 7th. Domain URLs will remain the same for all databases; however, article and page location within the domain sites may have changed. OUP has implemented re-directs within the sites in response to those changes. With these updates, OUP hopes to enhance discoverability and improve search capabilities, have more frequent content updates, and allow for social media integration, so users can share content across channels. |

Connecting Merced Agriculture to Yosemite National Park Author: Lisa Vallen October 30, 2017 In 1926 Highway 140 construction was complete and it connected Merced to Yosemite National Park. During that time Merced’s farming community was facing some serious challenges. Merced County Agent John L. Quail writes in the narrative report for 1926-1927: Many new settlers have been coming into the County during the past three years. For the most part, these people are entirely unfamiliar with the local climatic conditions and crops. The Irrigation District most recently completed has been settled largely by people who have developed land during a period of high costs... Many of those who have purchased land in the County during the past few years find that with the declining prices of farm products, their mortgages far exceed the sale value of their property.
