Taylor & Francis Open Access Publishing for UC Authors May 24, 2017 The California Digital Library has brokered a deal with Taylor & Francis via our license agreement for 2016 through 2018 granting up to a 75% discount on gold open access article publishing charges (APCs) for all UC authors. This discount applies to all articles published in Taylor & Francis Open Journals and Open Select Journals through the first 400 articles published per annum. After the limit is reached for UC as a whole, a 50% discount will be applied for the remainder of that year to all articles submitted. |

UCM Librarians Recognized in LIRT Top 20 for 2016 May 4, 2017 The American Library Association’s Library Instruction Round Table (LIRT) has selected an article authored by Sara Davidson Squibb, UC Merced Library’s Head of Research & Learning Services and Susan Mikkelson, former UC Merced Instruction & Scholarly Communications Librarian and current Librarian of Merced High as one of the Top 20 Library Instruction Articles for 2016. Published in the March edition of College & Research Libraries, “Assessing the Value of Course-Embedded Information Literacy on Student Learning and Achievement” reviewed the impact of a curriculum developed by UC Merced librarians and Writing faculty that integrated information literacy into introductory composition courses to improve academic performance. KL 360 & 397 Remodeled Author: Breanna Wright April 30, 2017 Over spring recess the two Kolligian Library third floor conference rooms received a fresh new look and upgraded technology. Each room now contains a large screen, white board, podium and updated seating arrangements. Room 397 features moveable furniture that provides 3 different room configurations. The room updates were supported by the UC Merced Library's Kolligian-Kashian endowment funds. Use the online Campus Reservation System (CRS) to reserve aa room up to six months in advance. Twenty-four hours advance booking is required. Reservations are limited to one reservation per week for use up to four hours. |

Library Collaborates with CARE Office for Sexual Assault Awareness Month Book Display April 30, 2017 The month of April is nationally recognized as Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and in collaboration with the CARE office the Library has dedicated its 2nd floor book display to help educate and bring awareness to issues surrounding sexual assault. As early as the late 1970s, "women...held protests against the violence they encountered as they walked the streets at night; they called them "Take Back the Night Marches.' Over time, sexual assault awareness activities grew to include the issues of sexual violence against men and men's roles in ending sexual violence. On April 1, 2001, the U.S. first observed Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) nationally. Since then, the National Sexual Violence Resource Center promotes national unity for SAAM activities. This year, the SAAM campaign is Engaging New Voices, [hoping] to help new voices begin to talk about preventing sexual assault." - www.nsvrc.org

APS and CERN Sign an Open Access Agreement for SCOAP³ April 27, 2017 The American Physical Society (APS) and The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), as the host organization of SCOAP³ (Sponsoring Consortium for Open Access Publishing in Particle Physics), have entered into an agreement to publish high-energy physics (HEP) articles from the three top journals of the APS – Physical Review Letters, Physical Review D, and Physical Review C - as open access as of January 1, 2018. This will bring SCOAP³ to attaining near to 90% coverage of all high energy physics literature, allowing free and unrestricted sharing of scientific information within the global scientific community, for the advancement of science. |

University Librarian Haipeng Li Receives Equality Award from the American Library Association Author: Breanna Wright April 21, 2017 The 2017 American Library Association (ALA) Equality Award is awarded to Haipeng Li, University Librarian at UC Merced. This annual award honors an individual or group for their outstanding contributions toward promoting equality in the library profession. The 2017 Equality Award jury commented that “that throughout his career, Mr. Li has championed equality within the profession, to library users, and on a global level as well.” The jury highlights Li’s work as co-chair of the second National Joint Conference of Librarians of Color (JCLC), and past presidency of the Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA). Library Debuts New Exhibit, Columbian Mammoth Bones Author: Breanna Wright April 17, 2017 In 2012, Columbian mammoth bones and more than 1,500 other fossils from the Pleistocene epoch were discovered by Caltrans workers in Merced County. Under the direction of Professor Mark Aldenderfer, the former dean of the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts, UC Merced accepted the fossils, which are now part of a permanent display to ensure they remained local and accessible to researchers and the public. The exhibit, on the second floor of the UC Merced Library near the services desk, features a juvenile mammoth skull and the skull, femur and tusk of a mammoth estimated to be 49 years old at the time of death. |
