Repaired Soft Seating is Like New! September 24, 2015 In winter 2014 the Library assessed the condition of all soft seating furniture in the building. We looked for ripped or torn seams, stuffing that was bursting out, and general repairs that needed to be made to couches and fabric chairs. It was nearly 10 years since the furniture had been purchased for the campus opening. It was apparent to us (and the students!) that some pieces were in dire need of mending. We identified 50 pieces of furniture that required attention and agreed that 30 pieces be sent for repair in summer 2015. We recently received part of the order back and, needless to say, the fabrics look fantastic. The furniture that was returned looks brand new. We hope that you enjoy it! |

Ovid Interface Enhancements September 23, 2015 The OVID interface (UC’s current host platform for the Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins titles) will be undergoing an upgrade on September 30, 2015, including changes to Journal Views and updated Complete and Abstract Reference Pages. Release of the New Calisphere September 16, 2015 Calisphere has released their new website. Currently in beta mode, it includes all of the existing content from the old Calisphere site, plus 70% more digital items from libraries, archives, and museums throughout the University of California system and across the state. Compiling more than 400,000 digital photographs, maps, diaries, letters, drawings, newspapers, oral histories, sound recordings, moving images, and other formats, the new site also boasts a more user-centered design, and great new features: * Fully responsive design, accessible on tablets and mobile devices Also included on the new site are UC Merced’s first set of costume designs by Dunya Ramicova, the Japanese Assembly Center... |

Interface Changes for ProQuest Resources August 28, 2015 ProQuest rolled out interface changes on August 20th intended to makes the search result displays more intuitive for you. ProQuest notes that their interface enhancements are intended to 1) simplify layouts 2) improve document viewing 3) offer a better landing experience for those arrive from Google Scholar or other search tools and 4) make the navigation of search results easier. To try out the new interface, visit resources on the ProQuest platform such as Sociological Abstracts, PsycInfo, or Congressional Publications. |

Interface Changes for Alexander Street Platform August 28, 2015 A number of Alexander Street Press resources including Theatre in Video and Music Online are now accessible through a new interface intended to 1) provide intuitive searching and browsing functionality 2) make prominant related and relevant content 3) improve viewing experiences through alternative screen layouts and 4) make instructional videos easily accessible. DNSA on New Platform August 28, 2015 On September 16th, the Digital National Security Archive (DNSA) will transition to the ProQuest platform from the Chadwyck-Healey platform. If you have a “My Archive” account on the currently platform, your saved searched and materials will not automatically transfer. Users who have used this functionality will have to re-run searches using DNSA on the new platform. Currently users can access this DNSA on either platform but as of September 16th, users will be taken directly to the new platform. |

Library Orientation Video August 21, 2015 In conjunction with the fabulous video production team at UC Merced, library staff and students produced an orientation video that introduced incoming students to the library through its Welcome Aboard theme. It was viewed by more than 1,700 students in ten Academic Success presentations as part of new Student Orientations in July and August. We invite you view this unexpected tour of the library. ProQuest Critical Maintenance August 12, 2015 On Wednesday evening, August 12th ProQuest will be performing critical maintenance to correct a load balance error from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. This will impact databases on the ProQuest platform such as ProQuest Congressional and Literature Online (LION). |

Reupholstery Project July 30, 2015 You may have noticed some empty spaces in the Library and asked yourself, wasn’t there a couch here? And a chair over there? Where is all the furniture? In July, the Library sent 30 pieces of furniture to our partners Tangram Interiors in Fresno, CA to be reupholstered and repaired. This is a result of a furniture condition inventory conducted earlier this year. We identified a total of 50 damaged pieces; the remaining 20 pieces are slated for repair next summer. Most of our furniture has been around since the opening of UC Merced. Our custodial team does a wonderful job keeping the furniture looking like new, but after 10 years, some of our pieces were showing their age. Before sending off the furniture, the Library considered the overall impact of purchasing replacement pieces versus the efforts of reupholstery and repair. The furniture will be back in place for the start of the fall semester. |
