HathiTrust Extends Non-Consumptive Research Tools to Copyrighted Materials

Since 2011, HathiTrust Research Center has been developing tools to utilize text and data mining methodologies using the HathiTrust collection. Until now, this service has been available mostly in the portion of the collection that is out of copyright, with copyrighted item access restricted.

Thousands of images by photographers Ruth-Marion Baruch (1922–1997) and Pirkle Jones (1914–2009) are now digitized and available on Calisphere, UC Santa Cruz University Library Digital Collections and the Digital Library of America (DPLA).

Thousands of Historic California Legislative Publications Available for Access

A joint effort between CDL’s Mass Digitization Team, the California Office of Legislative Counsel, and librarians at UC Berkeley, Stanford University, and the California State Library has resulted in 4,000 volumes of historic California Legislative materials being digitized and made open access in HathiTrust and Google Books.

Flipster Digital Magazines

The Library has partnered with ASUCM to provide the UC Merced campus community with digital magazine subscriptions through Flipster. You can read your favorite magazines from anywhere and on any device.

Before you get started, make sure you are connected to the UC Merced campus wifi or VPN.

On-campus

Visit Flipster using your web browser or download the Flipster app on any of your devices; the app is available on the Apple Store and Google Play Store. You can also check out an iPad mini configured with the Flipster app from the 2nd floor Library Services Desk.

ProQuest Platform Interface Enhancements

As of July 26th, ProQuest will roll out redesigned basic search and search results pages. These improvements will put a focus on source types to help retrieve more relevant results from across the platform.
Some of these improvements will include:
A new horizontal source type limiter above the basic search box to help users limit their results to the content types most relevant to their research.
Help panels to provide search guidance at the point of the most need.
“You are searching…” statements to show which databases are being searched along with the top source types contained within those databases.

SpringerProtocols to Transition to New Springer Nature Experiments

On July 25th, the SpringerProtocols platform will be deactivated and transitioned to Springer Nature Experiments.
Springer Nature Experiments is a database dedicated to protocols and methods. Free-to-use, it has been designed to assist researchers in finding and evaluating protocols and methods across the whole Springer Nature protocols and methods portfolio. Its algorithm tracks lab techniques and model organisms mentioned in articles to help locate the most relevant references. The number of citations and downloads are displayed showing which articles are worth further investigation.

U.S. Major Dailies Now Available

All UC campuses now have access to U.S. Major Dailies, which grants access to current content and archives dating back to the 1980s for five of the nation’s most valued national and regional newspapers: New York Times, The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, and The Wall Street Journal. The database is searchable as a whole or by specific publication in full-text format.

Morgan & Claypool Colloquium Digital Library of Life Sciences Collection 4 Now Available

UC Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Merced, Riverside, San Diego, and San Francisco now have access to the Colloquium Digital Library of the Life Sciences fourth collection covering biological, genetic and biomedical subject areas.

Fūzoku Gahō Now Available

Fūzoku Gahō is now available to patrons at all ten campuses and UCOP through JapanKnowledge.
Fūzoku Gahō which was originally published in Tokyo between February 1889 and March 1916 in 518 issues with over 38,000 articles and is considered the first graphic magazine produced in Japan. The articles cover a wide range of subjects, including social and cultural trends and conditions in the Edo, Meiji, and Taisho periods, customs, history, literature, geography, war and disasters.

Over A Million Digital Items Now Available Via Calisphere

Over one million historical images, texts, recordings, and other items are now accessible in the statewide digital resource aggregation represented by Calisphere, and soon in the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA). This collection contains unique objects from over 200 libraries, museums and archives in California.
