Undergraduate students are welcome to submit an application for the Carter Joseph Abrescy and Larry Kranich Library Award for Student Research Excellence. The application deadline is January 24, 2020.

Students Honored for Excellent Use of Library Resources

Long hours spent using the library’s print and digital resources are often a hallmark of a college student’s academic career. For Marisela Padilla Alcala and Sarah Lee, time spent in the library resulted in being named recipients of the Carter Joseph Abrescy and Larry Kranich Library Award for Student Research Excellence.

The award — Padilla Alcala and Lee received $500 each — recognizes students who demonstrate effective use of library and information resources, as well as an understanding of the research process and growth in research practices. As part of the application process, students submitted recent research papers or projects, as well as reflective essays on their research process and how the experience has changed and advanced their practices for future use.

The Abrescy and Kranich Library Award for Student Research Excellence was established in 2017 to recognize undergraduate students who demonstrate the effective use of library and information resources, an understanding of the research process, and growth in research practices.

The Carter Joseph Abrescy and Larry Kranich Library Award was established in 2017 to recognize outstanding undergraduate research at UC Merced. The award recognizes students who demonstrate effective use of library and information resources, as well as an understanding of the research process and growth in research practices. A committee of faculty and librarians will review applications and select awardees. A total of $1,000 will be awarded each year; no more than two awards of $500 each will be awarded in a given year.

All student applicants must be currently enrolled as undergraduates at UC Merced and be in good standing with the University (2.0 GPA). Students can submit applications for work produced individually or by a team. Library Award Scholarship Pays Homage to Persistence and Research

A generous gift from the grandmother of a UC Merced alumna and current staff member is benefitting two undergraduate students who put the UC Merced Library to good use.

Melissa Becerra, a third-year psychology student, and Nathan Parmeter [...] are the first recipients of the Carter Joseph Abrescy and Larry Kranich Library Award for Student Research Excellence.

The $26,250 endowment comes from Arlene Kranich of Sonora, grandmother of Development and Alumni Relations Director Kelli Abrescy as a memorial to Abrescy’s grandfather Larry Kranich, who died in 2003, and in honor of Abrescy’s new son, Carter.

Scholarship Opportunity: Library Award for Student Research Excellence

The Carter Joseph Abrescy and Larry Kranich Library Award for Student Research Excellence was established in 2017 to recognize outstanding undergraduate research at UC Merced. The award recognizes a research paper or project produced for a credit-bearing course within the last 12 months that demonstrates effective use of library resources. A committee of faculty and librarians will review applications and select awardees. A total of $1,000 will be awarded each year; no more than two awards of $500 each will be awarded in a given year.
